North Ossetian State University is one of the major university in the city of North Ossetia-Alania of Russia which was established in 1967 on the basis of the North Ossetian State Pedagogical Institute. The foundation of North Ossetian State University actually begin 1917 when after October Revolution country faced acute shortages of specialists. To solve this problem, the particular importance was given to the need for training of the indigenous regions of the country. For this purpose in 1920 in the city of Vladikavkaz, Terskiy Institute of Education was created and the first in the North Caucasus pedagogical high school was opened.
In the course of its further development and in accordance with changes in curricula and training programs institute was renamed several times. In the 1921-1922 academic year, it was called Gorsky Institute of Education, and in the next academic year - Gorsky practical institution of public education. During 1924-1925 academic year, the Institute was named Gorsky Pedagogical Institute.. In 1938, the institution became a major institution of the first category with six faculties and it was renamed to the North Ossetian Pedagogical Institute. On November 2, 1967 by decision of the Council of Ministers on the basis of the North Ossetian Pedagogical Institute ,the North-Ossetian State University was organized. Today.
The North Ossetian State University has 21 Faculties, 63 departments, 6 research centers, centers for collective use "Physics and technology of nanostructures," Research and Education Center of Natural Sciences, Research and Innovation Center "Pharmacy", a laboratory of innovative educational technologies, research and teaching laboratories, Scientific Library, Publishing and Printing Complex, Center for Information and Communication Technology, 3 museums, arboretum, dormitories for students and trainees.
